Urology Q & A

What is urology?

Urology is a field of medicine that specializes in diagnosing and treating problems in the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive tract. Urologists receive extensive training in medical care, as well as surgical procedures.

Urologic conditions, especially common problems such as an overactive bladder, enlarged prostate, and urinary tract infections are always initially treated with conservative therapies and medication. However, urologic surgery is often needed to treat obstructions and diseases that affect normal functioning.

What should I know about kidney stones?

Your urine contains dissolved minerals that are normally eliminated when you urinate. But when your urine becomes oversaturated, the minerals crystalize and clump together in your kidneys.

Small stones usually leave through your urine. However, the stones continue to enlarge, and if they don’t leave your kidneys, they get too large to pass through your urinary tract. When this happens, the stone may block the urethral opening or get stuck in your kidney or ureter.

Kidney stones are known for being quite painful, causing symptoms such as:

  • Severe pain in your side and back
  • Pain that comes in waves
  • Pain that radiates to your lower abdomen and groin
  • Pain during urination
  • Red, pink, or brown urine
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Frequent urination

If you have a kidney infection, you’ll also have a fever, a serious red flag that you need immediate treatment.

How are kidney stones treated?

Preva Surgicare - Surgery Center Of The Woodlands also houses the Stone Relief Center, a kidney stone relief clinic on the Preva Surgicare campus. They see you on the same day or within 48 hours to remove your painful kidney stones.

In most cases, they perform extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL). ESWL uses sound waves to create vibrations that break the stones into small pieces, which then can be passed in your urine. If your stones are too large, you may need an endoscopic or surgical procedure to remove the stones.

When might I need a prostate biopsy?

The urologists at Preva Surgicare - Surgery Center Of The Woodlands perform prostate biopsies when a digital rectal exam or a blood test called a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test shows you may have prostate cancer.

Your urologist performs the biopsy by passing a small needle into the prostate through the rectal wall. The needle removes a small amount of prostate tissue, which is sent to the lab for examination under a microscope.
